I obtained my Fine Arts degree from The University of Arizona in 1992.
However, since 1993, I have worked in the field mostly art directing,
coordinating, and putting together contracts and budgets, etc., for
a textbook design firm. I continued to paint but not as much as I would
have liked to.
I found myself growing tired of my own old phrase, "I don't have
time to paint". I didn't want to wait until my children were grown
up and I was retired. I felt that in order to be a good employee, friend,
mother, wife, chase after my kids, chauffeur them to all their after
school activities, and still be able to get dinner on the table, I had
to paint. It was very much a part of me.
I didn't have to go looking for inspiration. It has been here all along,
I was just moving too fast to see it.
I found that taking photographs gave me freedom to capture a moment
that I could later relive and paint. So, I paint. I paint my kids, I
paint my kids' friends, my pets, the view from my walk. I paint the
flowers I see, I paint pictures from my vacation or my friend's pictures
from her vacation. I paint on paper, canvas, walls, on furniture, and
sometimes wood. It doesn't matter what or how. The important thing is
that I paint. Painting challenges, teaches, and amazes me every time.
A lot like life.
Catalina is a juried member of the Arizona Art Alliance and a Signature
member of The Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild.
